Empathy is the ability to feel someones else's feelings, to be able to put yourself into their shoes and see things from their perspective.

This can be difficult, but those with high levels of empathy are able to imagine and feel what someone else is going through.

Empathy is not only something you are born with or you’re not.

It’s a skill that can be learnt, just like anything else.

What’s the value of having empathy?

It’s very productive for solving problems, avoiding conflict and deepening connection.

People who lack empathy are typically sociopaths and psychopaths.

They tend to gravitate towards position of authority, like the police, government and courts, so as to feel superior to others.

Because they lack the ability to empathise with others, they have no guilt, shame or regret for causing harm to others and can even enjoy it.

This is because they don't care how others feel.

They only know and can feel what they feel themselves, if they are even able to do that.

If someone is able to empathise with others, it becomes very difficult to cause unnecessary harm.

The greater the levels of empathy, typically the greater the level of compassion, care, generosity and kindness.

This is because empathetic people can see others as an extension of themselves and want the best for them just as they want the best for themselves.

Empathy is a key element to building and maintaining Utopia.

Without it, we end up with bankers, police, politicians, out of control militaries, the stock market and the legal system.

You can grow and train your empathy by consistently treating others as you wish to be treated.
Empathy is a prerequisite for one to be compassionate.

Empathy is the ability for one to empathise, to emotionally and intellectually understand other peoples predicaments and to visualise themselves in the same situation.

Compassion is the ability and external actualisation of empathy.

One may have empathy, but then not act upon it by offering words of comfort, advice or physical assistance when required.

If empathy is the emotional and intellectual state of mind to care for others, compassion is the physical enaction of it.

One cannot have compassion without empathy, but one can have empathy without compassion (although typically if someone has either one, they will have both).

When one is empathetic and compassionate, it strengthens the likelihood that their example will inspire someone else to be like them, which thus inspires others which then creates a world where people automatically adhere to the golden rule of equity, which is to treat others as you wish to be treated, because everyone will easily be able to do so due to a healthy amount of empathy and compassion.

Empathy and compassion is key to a just and well organised, healthy and functioning society.
